Custom linetype going the wrong way. Here we have a situation where two lines meet but the linetype text is upside down in one of them. The issue lies in the direction of the line. These two lines are LINE objects they are not joined polylines. One way to fix this is to rotate the line with the upside down text 180 degrees but that might not be practical. If the line that is upside down is not a line but a polyline made of several segment then rotating is out of the table. If that is the case then just and use the REVERSE command.

I've messed around with this a bit under LDT but never got a result I was happy with. They didn't behave well in certain circumstances.

I was optimistic when I saw the hatching for pipes in plan view. I was hoping to do the outside lines of the pipe with a fat perpendicular hatch in between. The pipe style has settings for hatch width but they don't seen to have any affect. Further experimentation with hatching might give you something similar to what you're looking for, and it won't be a flaky 'custom' solution, just a creative use of available features. In my opinion, AutoCAD is pretty weak when it comes to custom linetypes. I suspect this stems from the core program was originally created, and intended for, mechanical and architectural design where special lines are not really needed.

The way the linetypes work and the way you define them definitely come out of the 1980s. Minimum requirements are: Easy method of defining them. They recognise the plot scale and plot correctly They can have objects at the ends and not along the line as well as uniformly spaced objects along the line Text or other items are legible from the bottom of the drawing independent of direction of drafting Text can be dragged along the line as with a Land Desktop contour. They can be trimmed on a skew and display up to the trim line. They can recognise that they are contiguous with or abut another line with the same linetype and trim themselves so that there in no visual/plot overlap between the two lines A nice to have would be a batter linetype where the top and toe are drawn independently (such as the display on a grading object.) At my last public request I received a vague hint that it might be on the R2007 list.

Here in civil, we're all about special lines. How is everyone handeling where the pipes are actually drawn. I am used to having everything in a master dwg and the x-refing that to the various plan sheets. When it comes to profiles, the pipe networks have to be in the same dwg as the profile view. I would really like to have the pipe networks as the actual line work, but havent figured out a good process for doing the x-ref thing. The only procedure I'll need to change is having my profile views in my master dwg. I have a 250 lot subdivision and a mile long road widening project that I am breaking myself in on C3D. After that I get to break in ten more people. So far my biggest problem is getting to know the limitations C3D has. With Land, I knew what it could do, C3D I'm still learning.

Then we use sheet sets which creates a dwg & layout for each sheet in the set & xref's the onsite.dwg. All changes are made in the onsite.dwg & the individual sheets created with sheet sets are soley for plotting a specific view or layout. I'm working on 300 lot subdivision that's about 6mb.

The file size is managable. The styles for structures gives you the option to use a block to represent the structures instead to the outer part boundary from the parts catalog in both plan and profile. The block I use for the plan is a simple dashed box to represent the outer wall of the structure and a solid hatched area for the grate. The block also includes some underlying solid white hatch to blot out any conflicting linework. (part masking will basically do the same thing too) Insertion point is at the mid-point along the face of curb. Using blocks seems to be the best way to go for now.

I tried to make myself a complete selection of standard NJDOT structures but the partbuilder wasn't very cooperative. Now I just use a standard 4' square structure part with blocks for plan and profile viewing. It's much easier that trying to make 'parts' for double and/or modified inlets.
