You should be able to update the system software for free but not the maps. With newer Garmins they give one free map update in the first six months, after that there is a charge. On some models they have LMT or LM after the model number which means it has lifetime free map and traffic updates.

The LMT models usually cost more but are cheaper than paying for map updates. You can update your system software if you have a usb cable for it, then download Garmin updater. I will attach a link to the Garmin site. Thanks for using FixYa Aug 03, 2011 .

Register your Garmin at MyGarmin.com - from here Garmin guides you to download the webbrowser plugin to communicate with your Garmin StreetPilot C330 over a USB cable. When your Garmin StreetPilot C330 is connected through your webbrowser - it will show compatible map updates.

These can be ordered on DVD or downloaded. Note that downloading the map update will take a very long time and requires at least 5 Gb of disk space on your PC/Mac. The internet connection needs to be fast and stable enough to complete the huge download. Otherwise its better to order the update through DVD. Jul 09, 2011 .

Garmin has released new maps. Most of their units are entitled to a free update if the unit was purchased recently Just a heads up to anyone who recently purchased a C330. According to Garmin's tech support, the map udate 2008 is not free to those of us that recently purchased a C330. Only to those who purchased a C340 and up. Their excuse is that it is a 'low end' unit, and also that the memory cannot hold the full US maps on the DVD. Gee, I can purchase the update for $69.99 and load a subset of the maps if I want, according to the person in tech support, but I cannot receive it as a free update.

So, apparently buyer beware if you purchase Garmin's 'low end' units. You will apparently not be able to receive a free update of maps, even if the unit you buy is already out of date. Aug 23, 2009 .
